ROTE is an occasionally regular blog about whatever is on my mind, in my mouth, before my eyes, atop my desk, outside my academic specialization, under my skin, bouncing off my eardrums or streaming through my cables.

As a creature of habit, these things tend to be overly-ambitious history books, under-appreciated literature, lefty and quirky politics, aberrations and surprises in patterns of migration, unlikely identity and object choices, aggressively spicy food, moody art, arcane trivia and folklore of 20th-century radicalism, the once and former Soviet Union, super comix without superheroes, bad noir films, even worse action movies, and curiosities of place.

My previous blog life was here.

The current banner image is a detail from a photograph of Persian Tatars taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944).  More information can be found here.

Lastly, copyright rules are here.  Take heed.
